born February 21, 1954 (age 65) in Perth, Western Australia is professor and founder, Neuroepidemiology Unit, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. This unit expressly evaluates modifiable risk factors that predict the progression of Multiple sclerosis. He has served since 2017 as the Chief Editor for Neuroepidemiology in the journal Frontiers in Neurology, and he was Founding Editor – and is currently the Editor Emeritus – for Emergency Medicine Australasia. Jelinek also has the distinction of being the first Professor of Emergency Medicine in Australasia. Between 1987 and 2018, he published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, seven book forewords and eight books, and received more than 20 research grants. He is a frequent invited speaker.
In 2012, Jelinek began an ongoing study entitled HOLISM (Health Outcomes and Lifestyle In a Sample of people with Multiple sclerosis) that investigated the association of lifestyle with health outcomes in people with MS.
The results indicated a strong association between a higher quality diet, more physical activity, non-smoking and other lifestyle factors with better health outcomes in MS, gauged by a better quality of life, fewer relapses and less disability.
Following analysis of the baseline results of the study, as well as 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific publications, he revised his book Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis to be a 7-step evidence-based recovery program that outlined an approach to the preventive medical treatment of MS.
A significant aspect of this is program is dietary, and there are several dietary regimens proposed to or used by people with MS. The widely used dietary treatments include “The Swank Diet”, Jelinek's “Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis”, “The Wahls Protocol”, and “Ashton Embry’s Best Bet Diet”.
The medical community and some organizations that specialize in MS remain unconvinced of the results of these regimens and await higher level evidence before making definitive recommendations. Jelinek asserts that there is little downside to the adoption of such very healthy lifestyle behaviors while he and others continue to pursue a more robust evidence base. Supporters point out that such regimens decrease the likelihood of other chronic illnesses such as heart disease that are known to worsen MS and may assist in treating such debilitating symptoms as fatigue and diminished cognition.
Jelinek's non-profit organization conducts live-in workshops, seminars and self-help groups for MS patients around the world. Jelinek is active in fundraising for the continuing activities of the Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis charity.
Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis : Natural and Medical Therapies to Prevent Its Progression Paperback – April 30, 2005
A
practical guide to the successful Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis
recovery program for people with MS and their doctors. Thousands of
people with MS around the world are now following this preventive
medicine approach and living healthy, active lives.Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis is an established and successful program of treatment. Once a diagnosis of MS meant inevitable decline and disability. Now thousands of people around the world are living healthy, active lives on the Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis recovery program.
Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis explains the nature of MS and outlines an evidence-based 7 step program for recovery. Professor George Jelinek devised the program from an exhaustive analysis of medical research when he was first diagnosed with MS in 1999. It has been refined through major ongoing international clinical studies under Professor Jelinek's leadership, examining the lifestyles of several thousand people with MS world-wide and their health outcomes.
Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis is invaluable for anyone recently diagnosed with MS, living with MS for years, or with a family member with MS. It makes an ideal resource for doctors treating people with MS.
'I would have no hesitation in recommending Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis to my patients, but also to my friends and colleagues.' Professor Gavin Giovannoni, MBBCh, PhD, FCP (S.A., Neurol.), FRCP, FRCPath, Chair of Neurology, Blizard Institute, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry
'Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis combines hard scientific evidence with practical advice and compassion. It will be of benefit to nearly everybody affected by MS and I heartily recommend it.'
